For all my sorrow, I didn’t cry at Adeline Ferry’s funeral. Since the loss was so much less immediate for me than it must be for the people who had still known her, it didn’t seem right to cry. The small girl watched the creature wriggling at the bottom of the bowl. Once more water was added it stopped thrashing so violently, instead beginning to crawl with an undulating motion that reminded her of a worm.
